Heterogeneity is characteristic of the entire œuvre of painter, draughtsman, sculptor, author and film director Julian Schnabel (b. 1951 in New York). Since the 1980 Venice Biennale his internationally exhibited work has been both conceptual and figurative. Full of signs and symbols, made from a wide, unconventional combination of materials, his large-scale pictures incorporate a tension between the Modern and the Post-Modern. In his sculptural work he remains programmatically awkward and ambivalent. His mighty, archaic bronze figurations remain dedicatedly ambivalent. In them weighty material presence hits upon contrived pathos.
