Skulpturenpark Köln

Graphic designer and collector Karl Gerstner (b.1930 in Basel † 2017 in Basel) was a selftaught sculptor. The most significant exponent of Schweizer Typografie, he was represented in 1964 and 1968 at documenta in Kassel. His sculptures, which frequently do not get beyond the design or model stage, correspond in their objective, geometric formal idiom and use of colour to his aesthetic tradition. With his cool, artificial objects, Gerstner points to the complementary contrast between art and nature. Only when installed outdoors, preferably in public parks, are they revealed as the ideal complement to, and extension of our perception of the original environment.
