Implicit in the sculptures of Kirsten Ortwed (b.1948 in Copenhagen) are statements not only about their own mass and structure but also about the space that surrounds them. The sculptress proceeds analytically, and with a dynamic working process produces non-figurative works located on a thin line between nature and culture: her works correspond - full of internal tension - to surroundings which are not natural spaces but constructed ones, without however being subject to social systems of order. In 1997 the artist, who today lives in Cologne, represented her homeland Denmark at 47th Venice Biennale.
