Aaron Currys (b. 1972 in San Antonio, Tx.) sculptures animate the observer: He walks back and forth in order to study more closely the shapes and volumes of the works from various angles. Yet his eyes inevitably come to rest on seemingly familiar details: on a form bearing similarities to a knee or a shoulder, a leg bone, an arm or a skull. As soon as the perspective shifts, however, these visual echoes of the human anatomy melt into abstract forms. This transformation between abstraction and figuration is a constant feature of Curry's entire oeuvre - together with his technique of combining various media, particularly sculpture and painting, and fluctuating between two and three dimensionality. The title of the work for the Skulpturenpark was borrowed from M. P. Shiels' fantastical novel The Purple Cloud. In addition to the colour, the haunting presence of the sculpture is also based on the book, for it appears as a mythical creature or an argonaut, taken from a science-fiction saga or a comic.
