Influenced by artists like Carl Andre and Tony Smith, Joel Shapiro (b.1941 in New York) turned to Minimalist sculpture after beginnings as a painter. From 1975 he worked on small sculptures of chairs, ladders, bridges and houses, which he installed in gallery rooms which they made to look oversized. In the 1980s his works became larger. The human form - in a highly stylised form that recalled constructivist sculpture - entered his work with long, fourcornered blocks of wood and patinated bronze. Where his former work tended to be heavy and earthbound, these radiated balletic lightness with their elaborate balance.
