Many-layered ambivalence is characteristic of the highly experimental, partially autobiographical work of Louise Bourgeois (b. 1911 in Paris, d. 2010 in New York) who emigrated to New York in 1938. Over five decades she has produced drawings and pictures alongside charming little sculptural pieces and monumental, room-filling sculptures and installations made from the most varied materials. Sexuality from the female perspective is a fundamental theme of her work which fluctuates between figurative and abstract. Long established in the USA, it took her participation in documenta 9 and the Venice Biennale (1993) to awaken sustained international interest.
