The sculptures of Eduardo Chillida (1924-2002 in San Sebastián) are among the most significant of the 20th century. After a Greek-archaic phase, he made his first abstract iron sculptures in the early 50s. He starts to use steel, and from 1959 wood, alongside traditional wrought iron; he later turns to ceramics, concrete, alabaster and various combinations of contrasting materials. His most monumental works are walk-in sculptures, akin to architecture. In 2000 Berlin was set in front of the German Federal Chancellor’s Office. His works are visual representations of a differentiated struggle to grasp the experience of space, including “inner space” as the spiritual counterpart of perception.
