Karl Prantl (b. 1923, d. 2010 in Pöttsching, Austria,) studied painting at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Vienna. He has worked exclusively as a sculptor, principally in stone, since 1950. Since 1959 regularly organised symposiums for sculptors, in the course of which he worked for months in the open air. When working on his metaphorically charged ground-sculptures, he started from the material, followed its specific structures and qualities, and initiated a dialogue between the tooled and the untreated surfaces. The Austrian sculptor’s Meditationssteine are signifiers which radiate into the countryside and challenge the visitor to engage with things temporal.
