George Rickey (b. 1907 in South Bend, Ind., d. 2002 St. Paul, Minn.) turned systematically to kinetic sculpture via the renewal of Alexander Calder's ideas on the mobile. The varied and important œuvre of this theorist and historian of Constructivism is rooted in the first sculptural experiments of the 1940s. Expanded to include surface and body structures, his strictly geometric steel constructions, ranging from simple to complicated, are precision-engineered constructs without motors but often with pendulum movements. Rickey is, alongside Naum Gabo, Calder and David Smith, one of the pioneers of modern American sculpture.
