If at first he worked in monochrome painting and photography, Bernar Venet has since 1963 been more active as a sculpture. In his engagement with Systemics an Minimal Art he made tube sculptures accompanied by the appropriate functional technical drawings, into which he integrated mathematical formulae. Their specific aesthetics and strictly rational logic is a constantly recurring theme, in opposition to which in the 1970s and 1980s he introduced the seemingly calligraphic form of sculpture which he designated as ligne déterminée. Alongside his work as a sculptor he is increasingly engged in such forms of artistic espression as film, music and furniture design.
