Johannes Wald
Pedestal for a Muse, 2011
Northern boulder, cowhide

Johannes Wald’s sculpture greets the visitor at the entrance area with a surreal play on antithetical materials. The boulder is covered during the Park’s opening hours with cowhide, which is then stored away at closing time.

In this way Johannes Wald has created a work that is a sculpture only during visiting hours, which by night turns back into a boulder. The sculpture plays on the surreal idea of opposing materials that contrasts the cold hardness of stone with the warm softness of an animal’s pelt. The title implies that the work is to be seen as the pedestal of the absent figure of a muse who may take her place on it, but remains invisible.

Johannes Wald lives and works in Berlin.
