Santiago Sierra (born 1966 in Madrid, lives in Madrid) had a gigantic cube placed on the edge of the park grounds. The monumental cube measures four cubic metres. The concrete walls it is made of were delivered directly next to the bridge pillars, involving heavy machinery. The cube is black. It seems like a muted Kaaba or an example of sinister sepulchral architecture. In Sierra's work there is always a link with minimal art. But he wants to shift the focus away from form towards an appraisal of the achievement and the conditions of producing the work. His artwork deals with labour, exploitation, oppression and exclusion. Metal letters and figures show the working time it took to make the monument, transport it and place it at Skulpturenpark Köln. The cube is a monument of social criticism.
